Title: THA taking hugh steps!!!
Post by: hipcheck34 on August 07, 2018, 09:03:34 AM
This is my sons 3rd and final year at THA, and I have to say this is the most he has been excited to start school since he started preschool. What a huge step THA took this year and now being to field 2 complete teams. One Prep Team and a Varsity High school team. The Prep team will be part of NAHL and NAFP. I remember the first year 17 kids second year 28 and this year they stand at 40 student athletes. Dont take this wrong as this isn't for every kid out there but if your son is serious you have to look into this program. I know it dosent come without its down falls, but what program does???

I heard that they changed up the academic approach this year and are partnering with the local schools for academics - any insight you could share on that?

They changed it up last year. The boys now have classes at South Lake Tahoe High School and also online courses. My south was very happy to have some classes at the HS. It also was a hugh with the support of the Team. When we held are first Prep Tournament last year the rink was packed for all there games.

Last season I was told by a THA player's parent that some of the teachers at the public HS were not so accommodating with the hockey players missing so many class days to play hockey. Therefore the hockey players grades suffered. Can anyone confirm?

IMO the real measure of success for THA is how many of their players get accepted & graduate from college, since none will go NHL.

I find it very refreshing that someone is happy with their current situation.

It sure doesn't take long for the negative trolls to come out and start bashing things.

Im not sure about other kids but my son received a 3.4 GPA and scored 1150 on his first time taking his SAT and he has been there for 2 years going on 3. His freshman year her at VPHS he was at a 2.5 GPA ... SO I would have to say that something is going in the right direction.

The success is already showing they have doubled there attendance in 2 years thats pretty good I would say, my soon have many offers to go play JR's and decided his best interest was to finish his senior year and his offers should double. He will do a year of Juniors see how that goes and then off to NAU to get his engineer degree, unless for some reason he gets a better offer for college.

Tahoe turned some more heads this weekend going 4-0 in Minnesota at the NAHLFP showcase. They are 13-3 and these boys are going in the right direction. They have some big games coming up in Chicago next week and then back at in Minnesota at the end of November. Keep rockin boys...

This is awesome from a hockey perspective but with travel nearly on a scale of a professional football team, what about the education of these teenagers?   What will they be prepared to do for a living when the dream of a pro hockey career proves to be an honorable and wonderful fantasy?

Well I can only speak for my son who is excelling in there school program and is currently carrying a 3.5 GPA including 2 AP classes. He has plans of one year of Jr.s and then college. He knew long ago that the NHL wasn't his dream but maybe a scholarship alittle extra hockey and and education. Also took his first SAT and scored 1150 not to bad but wants to take it again to improve. We as parents are very happy with schooling and the program as he is finishing his 3rd year there and graduating..

My son is attending his first year at THA. I had huge questions as to the quality of the program since my son was used to private school AP/Honors and other pretty advanced classes. I am not gonna lie and say it is the best education ever, but we will see. The hockey is clearly out of this world. The educational aspect is yet to be determined. My boy is a Jr and he just took the PSAT. Ill compare this year's results with last year's and see where we stand. He will take the SAT for the first time in May, so there's that. He has a few things going for him; he's self motivated and he has a momma who stays on him :)

For what its worth, from my perspective this is the most informational thread on this board.  Would love to hear from other THA parents, especially around the educational aspect.  I'm also curious whether THA is mostly Western US players or where players are coming from.

Thanks all for sharing.

Right now there are two THA teams. Varsity is generally a younger team that plays in the ADHSHL. The Prep team is typically older. My son is on the Prep team so I can tell you the home states for them:
OH - 1
CA - 10
IL - 1
CO - 2
TX - 1
AZ - 2
ID - 1
NJ - 1
NY -1
Russia - 1

There are a hand full of players from southern California and Northern California, mixed in with kids from New York, Chicago, Colorado, New Mexico, and Canada.  I would say its more western but a good mix and balance for all over.... I would say there has been a big difference in the boys recruited for this year as they are tenacious never quit attitude, and there are no clicks on this team they treat everyone as an equal and I believe that what has made the Prep team so Successful this year to past years.

SALTY? THA takes whoever shows up and pays.  SALTY is how you felt when the Titans didn’t sign your kid a couple seasons back.  That was SALTY.

Yeah they take anyone maybe the first year but this year had to turn away alot of applications... Now reason to talk down on a program that is pointing talented hockey kids in the right direction helping them take that next step into Juniors and /or College...

Its always nice to get photos of the boys at THA volunteering at the Halloween carnival for kids. Not only are they learning the game, the program is teaching the boys what it means to give back to the community that has supported this program the last 3 years. The future is bright for THA....

what flavor koolaid are they using up there?!

but in all seriousness, good for the kids, although is this any different than what many other teams and programs throughout the state and the country are doing?  not exactly news worthy imo...

"their" is the correct one to use, not "there".

and you don't often see it, but it's "there".  guess most don't need the proverbial pat on the back...

How did THA do in Chicago?

Well, not great. We went 1-3. There were some bright spots though. We replayed a team we had lost to in Minnesota 8-1 (Madison Capitals) and narrowed the gap 2-3 (loss). So now we are 14-6 for the season. Considering half the team is 2002, it's pretty impressive to be playing in the 18AAA/Elite division. Oh, one of the boys got a tryout camp invitation to a Tier 1 Junior A team. So there's that. The season is still young.

Couple of parents were talking about the new program in Stockton that plays in the NAHL PREP league.   They played some games at Sharks ice this past weekends and had trouble with mediocre teams.  They had one solid player, a big defenseman that skated end to end.

How does the Tahoe team compare to them?   Have you guys played?

We have not. Our THA Varsity team will play them twice this weekend. Our Prep team will play them at the next NAHL-Prep tournament in December. Should be an interesting match up to be sure. The battle of the TWO California prep schools!!

Tahoe is not a Prep School.  Stop this none sense already.  Shattucks is a prep school on a beautiful campus.  Tahoe is hot Garbage.  Stop pumping up this charter school with a hockey rink.  ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

Hipcheck, Application denied? I don’t think so.  Besides, you don’t apply to THA, you just show up with your checkbook.  It’s parents prolonging a dream that died after Bantams.  Shattucks is a prep school. Tilton is a prep School.

Yeah you make good points Brazzers. However at least someone is making an attempt to try something other than the failed (IMO) CAHA routine. Most everyone else just complains or does not try to force a solution to it. I'm not a big fan (yet) of THA but at least they are trying something different instead of whining about CAHA.  Only time will tell if this is successful.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, I thought I would add my $.02. California now has two legitimate prep schools that offer a hockey program. Both are just barely getting off the ground. Should they continue to attract talent and build over the next decade and beyond, there is some real opportunity for California hockey players. The system in place now is damaged. For those of you who live near the Jr Kings/Jr Ducks/Jr Gulls - you have options. For those of us who live far away from those meccas, we have fewer options. For my 16 year old it was find a AA program or relocate to a prep school back east. I wasn't ready to send my 16 year old back east so we took a chance on Tahoe.

He's only been there 3 months and the improvement is dramatic. He's doing well academically (Ill be honest and admit I am not sold on the schooling. My son is self motivated so as long as he prepares for the SAT and continues to get high marks he should be fine. It is tough to go from a high quality private school to online/public school). His hockey improvement has been noticed by more than a few scouts - one NAHL team and one Junior A team from Canada (who invited him to tryout camp in April). The bottom line is that we as parents have to make decisions based upon what is best for our kids given the options available to us. THA is working out great this year. I will reassess and see where things are for next year. For now, I feel like I made the right decision for my boy.

Do you not get that fact that the boys goto SLTHS?? They take classes at the HS, a lot of the boys went to homecoming. Maybe you should come out of the house every once in awhile and enjoy some sun light. THA will be around long after your kid is done playing.
