Title: LAKHSL 2016/17
Post by: Bantam B Dad on May 03, 2016, 12:44:35 PM
Looks like 12 teams for next season (which is up from the 8 from last year). Great to see the league expanding.  Assuming that Santa Barbara will again be the team to beat?

More and more are going this route each year.  It just makes a lot of sense for the kids and parents on all fronts.

Can anyone provide information on why HS Hockey "just makes a lot of sense for the kids and parents on all fronts" vs having Midget A teams?
Just wondering what the advantages are as NORCAL has plans this season to start up HS Hockey teams & get rid of all the Midget A teams. Thanks!

Midget A only had a couple of teams last year.  This is a pretty good alternative and if it keeps expanding there may (someday) be a route to Juniors and College like the MN high school leagues it is being patterned after.

Midget A only had 4 teams last year and they made us play at the 18 A level which was absurd, 3 or the 4 teams were competitive, While our team which was competitive was made up of primary first year midgets 14 and 15 year olds playing against 18 year olds,  NORCAL on the other hand had a solid division of 16U A with 6 teams, however we were not allowed to compete with the true 16 U division at the State level.

And basically force kids to play in the at the High School level if they wanted to play,  with the politics of this years scenario it will make navigating the waters a lot more difficult I for one can say I am trying to final a viable place for my boy to play this year without have to move out of state the KAKHSHL is not in our district so it is not an option for us

We will be in the same predicament next year and we're already worried about where we will end

Why is it an issue to play HS rather than Midget A?  I would say in general (no offense intended) if a player hasn't advanced beyond playing A by Midget they are probably not looking at scholarships, juniors or pro.

HS hockey fits the bill for building great memories and continuing to hang around the right crowd.  Nothing bad about sporting a letterman's jacket in a hallway full of young ladies either.  HS is you in CA but it has to crawl before it can walk.  It is not going to come out of the gates with MN caliber hockey.

So the Kings just announced that they will indeed have a JV division this year with 6 teams.  Add that to the new teams they are hoping to have join the Varsity division and you have a rapidly expanding program.  Say what you want about the various number of A's associated with the any of the Midget divisions, but it would appear that wind will be blowing in a new direction in the coming years.

Is there a list of who is doing a JV?

I didn't have time to check out the WR tryouts, but there was more that 40 kids that shows up for Pavel's pre tryout clinic yesterday and several said they were doing the WR tryout later in the day.

We are about a month away from practices kicking off.  Looks like the league will have 10 Varsity and 4 JV teams.  I am guessing that SB will again be the team to beat?  Any opinions out there?

RE: LAKHSL schools - 2016 Labor Day Tournament?

I've heard from the Tinseltown organizer that there are a whopping ZERO teams registered for Labor Day Tournament in the H.S. Division.... Where are the LAKHSL teams playing ??  The OC Hockey Festival is full w/ a waiting list with only (1) team registered from LA.
Anyone? Anyone?

Not much...West Ranch did well at the San Diego Tourney...I hear South County lost a very good player, Torrance looks pretty solid but no games yet.

Not sure about South County.  Santa Barbara again seems the team to beat based on the Rosters.

Kern came back and beat El Segundo 4-1 yesterday.  The Aviators won a thriller against the Destroyers 2-1.  Anyone have the score of Valencia and Burbank?

Santa Barbara wins 5-0 over Kern County. Star studded event as Jim Fox and Kings Ice Crew make an appearance. Seemed like there was still some residue from last years championship, as the game featured some physicality.

I was able to watch the last two periods tonight. Wasn't as close as the score imo Kern has a very good goalie could have been 7 or 8-0

Well, except for a BUNCH of their games not being streamed lately.  Or only streamed for part of a game.  Several games canceled blaming internet problems.  West Ranch was a victim last night.  I was hoping to see it.

Let's talk some LA Kings High School League Hockey!!!!   Looks like the class of the field is again the Santa Barbara team.  They thumped West Ranch last week.  It looks like after SB, there is a pack of teams - Kern, West Ranch, East County, South County, Burbank, Torrance and El Segundo that all look very competitive with one another.  Valencia and Santa Clarita may be a tick under (but can still beat any of the others on any given night).  Level and pace of play has gotten much better from last year.  10 teams and they are rocking and rolling.  Can't wait to see what this League looks like in 5 years.

Results from the Weekend....  West Ranch beat El Segundo 8 -3.   East County was losing to SB 3-0 going into the 3rd (good result for EC). Valencia lost to Santa Clarita 9-3 and Kern County edged out The Aviators 3-2 in a Shootout.  The level of play has kicked up a notch this year. Despite some lopsided scores this week, the league feels a little more balanced this year.  It is moving along one step at a time.

A few things concern me about this league going forward:

What happens when the Kings drop the financial support after next season? $3K per year becomes $4? maybe $5? The Kings are currently covering equipment (jerseys, helmets, matching pants) probably refs, Black Dog TV coverage and who knows what rate they have bargained for for ice time.

Will teams need to cut some corners to make it affordable? How will the teams look with tattered, used jerseys or cheap ones. With no video coverage will there be any more highlights? Will a more expensive league draw more teams? At 10 teams now, I don't see many more starting up.

The age difference from a Freshman to a Senior seems problematic. I see too great of a size/ability level on the ice and it seems dangerous. I like the idea of the JV division but the level there is even more uneven and it must be frustrating to have so few teams.

Lastly, I don't see the level of play rising overall. The bottom teams are better thanks to improved goaltending but the top teams are getting sloppy and too dominated by individual play. Even games between the league leaders feature poor passing and players falling without contact regularly. I'm not sure that tracking and giving out individual awards at the end of the season is a great idea. Players grabbing 6 to 8 points a game in blowouts against the lower teams while teammates get 0 doesn't make the league better.

All in all, I applaud the Kings for the effort and the league is fun to take part in. But it will be a struggle to attract top players and become a talent level league that moves players on to upper levels with it's current state of affairs.

I am not expert on this, but I think Burbank has a high school team. Beverly Hills had one that played out of Toyota. Don't know about next year.

You should know (I don't think this is a secret, but it's probably not common knowledge either) that ownership of Jr. Kings has moved from AIG to the actual Kings (this is a long, long story) and the way Kings and Ducks are taking over all the rinks (and Ducks planning new ones) I think HS hockey is a viable situation going forward

It may be able to attract some elite players who want more ice time, depending on scheduling. I will say travel hockey fees PLUS another $2800 would be pretty challenging for most people.

One thing Kings used to do well was their in-house hockey, basic jerseys, the old fashion polyester wool-style socks, and especially how they would adjust the teams after the first few games. Of course that worked because the teams all played out of one location.

Certainly worth exploring. Travel hockey beyond Pee Wee is a whole different animal and HS could be a good alternative / supplement.

The first LA KINGS High School Tournament seemed to be a success.  The Rally in The Valley had 7 teams in the Varsity Division and it ended up being very competitive.  While Santa Barbara won (as expected), East County gave them all they could handle.  The first time they met the Outlaws had the lead with about 4 minutes to play before they lost.  And in the Championship game it came down to a thrilling 3-2 victory for East County. Fox Sports was even there to cover it and it will be featured on an edition of Kings Weekly.  Prior to the final, the semi between East County and South County as another nail biter as that one went into OT with the Aviator goalie doing everything he could to put his team in the finals.  All in all it seemed like the kids had a really good time (and in the end that is what really counts, right?).  Great to see so many older kids who may not be AAA players continuing their Hockey careers.

Year 2 of the LAKHSHL is wrapping up.  Playoffs are today with Kern County taking on West Ranch and Santa Barbara playing East County.  The winner face each other at Staples next Saturday.  The Kern/West Ranch Game should be a good one.  It will be streamed live on Blackdog if you are interested.  Solid 2nd season for the league.

The last couple HS games I watched were down right thugish.  Stupid penalty after stupid penalty.  Cross checks, head slaps and boarding.  The leagues is devolving not evolving.  The coaches do nothing to control the game.

There are 2 teams in the league that play that style and they had a playoff game on Sunday.  The rest of the teams play a fairly clean style of play.

Have watched a lot of games this year and wouldn't pin point West Ranch or Kern as more thuggish than others. Santa Barbara and East County had their share of issues. Unfortunately, you could say that the physical style makes for winning hockey in this league.

Head slaps, cross checking a downed player, flipping the net over on the goalie and punches are not "physical style" nor does it in anyway aid in a win.  There was not physical intimidation via checking, it was gangsta.

You know you might be on to something!  I hope this next season my son's coach goes with that strategy of putting your top scorer in the box for 14 minutes.  Maybe kick it up a notch and skate 4 on 5 the whole game.  Keep a guy in the box just for the intimidation factor!
