Mites 2018-19
« on: May 30, 2018, 10:43:50 PM »
Now that spring hockey is done, Memorial Day is in he books and tryouts are around the corner it’s time to look ahead to the 2018-19 season.  Who looked good in tournament play this weekend? What programs held their own in Spring Select? Which coaches are going to be developing kids and their teams better than the rest?
The new season will see a Gretzky division added to the traditional A/B structure. Rumor has it that Mite B are playing half-ice in lieu of cross-ice. Birth year teams may be more common than not. Will participation continue to grow in California?  Lots of fun yet to come.

I heard there will be an end of the year “playoff” as well.

Still no keeping score during the regular season so not sure how seeding will work.

The Gretzky division will be a “C” division or in-house level.  Perhaps the clubs believe this will be a softer introduction to club hockey, or maybe it just gives them an opportunity to grow their numbers and potential talent pool.

Per SCAHA meeting minutes...

For Mite A:
1. Increase games from 21 minutes to 24 minutes; the ice slot time requirement will not change ~ 1.5 hr ice slot
2. All SCAHA clubs wishing to field Mite A teams must have:
a. ADM boards and nets
b. Home and Away jerseys
3. An End of Season SCAHA tournament

For Mite B:
1. Half-ice games with 4-Team jamboree
2. Increase games from 21 minutes to 24 minutes; the ice slot time requirement will
not change ~ 1.5 hr ice slot
3. All SCAHA clubs wishing to field Mite A teams must have:
a. ADM boards and nets
b. Home and Away jerseys
4. An End of Season SCAHA tournament

SCAHA would lead an effort to support clubs/rinks with limited house hockey participation by offering a Gretzky division. The proposed format would be:
1. Cross-ice 6-Team jamborees
2. 3 games/jamboree with each game 24 minutes
3. All SCAHA clubs/rinks must have ADM bumpers and nets as well as Home and
away jerseys.
4. All ice requirements (1.5 hr ice slots) must be provided by participating rinks

Couple questions -

1 - If there is an end of the year "playoff/SCAHA tournament, does that mean Mite A is keeping score and records this year?  Or will this just be an end of year tournament in the new Irvine rink to promote the new Duck facility by bringing in every Mite team?

2 - Where are the teams that expect to be good playing for Labor Day?

3 - Who are the teams that expect to be good?  Anyone know who the team to beat will be this year?

Does anyone know what is the minimum number of players a mite team needs on the bench to participate in the jamborees? Would it be 5 or 6 since the games are 4 on 4?

My son's team played a team with just 4 skaters last season. They didn't have a goalie and the 4 skaters played the whole "game"

Thanks, I was wondering if there was 5 or less if the team had to forfeit, but it sounds like as long all the team needs is 4 skaters. Lots of ice time!

Remember, they don't keep score for the Mites so really anything seems to go. We have had games where the refs don't show up so the coaches "ref"

What do we take away from the weekend tournaments? Were there any stand out performances? Unexpected results? Unique, surprising encounters with teams, officials, tournament staff or parents?  How did your kids teams do over Labor Day weekend?
IHE Tournament was overall a good start for many of the teams I saw. There were a few rough patches  and a learning curve to be met by a few clubs as well. Thanks to all the volunteers and staff for a smooth weekend of hockey in SoCal.

Aliso Viejo Ice Palace got lazy and it was embarrassing. Wanted the mites to go full sheet with big nets. Wouldn't bring out the boards, had to use the bumpers. Left all the bumpers free floating

Ouch!  GR was probably just trying to distract everyone from the fact they have the worst 2 ice surfaces in the history of Southern California.  It's so bad you almost wish Costa Mesa was resurrected(if anyone remembers that place)!  To their credit they still somehow attract a lot of kids into their club with such poor conditions.  I wonder how that will work out for them with that new facility opening up down the street from them next year.  Hopefully they're stashing all that gold for what lies ahead.

It does surprise me about the boards considering their director is in charge of the Mite division and they made a rule this year that everyone needs to have Mite boards in order to even field a team.  Although I don't know of any rinks that didn't already have them so I'm not sure why they threw that in this years rules.  I guess you gotta come up with something to put print for the masses.
