scholarships available from the big clubs??
« on: July 24, 2018, 10:37:46 AM »
Since the season has yet to start, lets stir up the conversation about a topic you always hear about, but most won't confirm/deny- scholarships.

I have heard that the major clubs have given financial aid/scholarships (or whatever you want to call it) to the top kids to convince them to play for the club/team.  I have heard of a few kids who have gotten such financial assistance, but parents shy away from addressing or confirming it.

Through clubs it's called Financial Assistance. Most clubs have a form and process to go through, which is offered to everyone who signs. Can't say I know anyone who has gone through the process... but I'm sure favoritism happens.  What you're also likely referring to is when another parent pays for a kid that isn't their own. That happens all the time, but not sure how it's really against the rules. This is a pay to play sport... so if someone else wants to pay for everyone, then I guess they can.

I would be willing to bet that most, if not all clubs, big or small dangle the carrot.  Some clubs use it more than others, depending on how tired they are of losing.  I believe a few are the norm. If a team is rostering a large amount of kids, that would be a good indication as to how desperate a team is. On paper the financial  assistsnce program looks great.  But just like Socialism, SOMEONE eventually has to pay.  In carrying too many kids, sadly the bottom half of the roster pays not only with $$ but little ice time.

In NorCal (especially one intercity club) they do give them out for kids who could not afford to play without it.  That is what I know for sure.  However it wouldn't surprise me to hear of other clubs doing it to entice players.
