Squirts 2019-2020
« on: May 01, 2019, 08:24:49 PM »
Certainly seeing more kids on the ice all spring then ever before. Tournament teams, clinics, select and prospect leagues, in-house, 3v3, etc. With all the potential development we should see some solid competition from B, BB & A teams come fall. Now that kids are committing their time with coaches and programs and setting themselves up for tryouts we are also seeing the coach/team announcements from the clubs. That brings us to the topic of conversation... Who are the coaches, teams & clubs that have your attention? Are you sold on a program, opportunity, philosophy? Chasing letters?
Seeing the politics, drama and movement of coaches and players from club to club has people scrambling. It’s easy to see and is often a topic of conversation between parents. As a parent myself I am trying to stay out of it and not get caught up in it,  let the kiddo forge his path. That said this forum is both informative and entertaining so I welcome your input, discussion, insights and shared experiences.  Hockey is fun.

Looks like a lot of A teams this year considering there was only 5 last year.  I wonder what the list will look like when all is said and done.  Moose, Reign, Goldrush, Ice Dogs, Kings x 2, Ducks x 2 or 3, Valencia, Golden Bears, Gulls.  Anyone else missing or incorrect?  Any early front runners like last years Goldrush 2 team?

That's great more teams this season, Hopefully most stay i think BB has 18. Not sure about the front runners. Im thinking Flyers, Ice Dogs, Kings , Ducks Labbe, bears should be the top teams. I seen a ton of really good kids but they are spread out.

14 A teams in the declarations this year.  That a big jump from 5 last year.

Valencia is a good program, was that the 2010 group that beat the Gasseau group?  I thought the 09' Flyers were talking PeeWee A.

I dont think it was the 2010 Flyers, The team as a whole was definitely bigger and taller than Sandys 10s.

If this is happening in basketball and hockey is just as violent not sure I want my kid to play hockey year round...what are the alternatives though to maintain his place on the team with the current coach and kid...

Every coach has been through mandatory USA Hockey coaching education.  Additionally, they have to do the age specific modules for the age group they are coaching.  And in that material it is hammered into you that USA Hockey has identified "early specialization" and year round play as pitfalls that inhibit athleticism.  It is hammered into them over and over, that kids need time off from hockey, and that they should play multiple sports.

With the professionalization of coaching there are some good things, in that kids have skilled coaches available to work with them.  However, along with the benefits of skilled coaching, comes more pressure to train year round.  Time off, combined with other sports is a tried and true way of developing athletes and allow them to recharge their interest in the sport.  Unfortunately it's up to the parents to say no to year round hockey, and over training in any sport.  Hockey is certainly not the only sport that has this pressure to specialize, but at least to USA Hockey's credit, they do what they can to provide guidance in this regard.  If you actually take the time to look at the USA Hockey website, they have a fairly constant flow of articles that advocate these same ideas even if the coaches don't necessarily pass this information along.

There are a lot of A and BB teams this year, which is really cool! There is like 50 mite teams between A and B too!  Mite and Squirt tournaments seem pretty bare, is everyone going out of state to kick the year off?  Or is everyone down in San Diego for Labor day?

Definitely a decent spread of teams this year and the kids are back at it. We will be in San Diego for Labor Day.  Preseason schedule will be out next week so we should have a roadmap of September travel at least.  See you all at the rinks.

Moving Day 2019 - SCAHA has the regular season divisions set now that we have seen who’s who in preseason. No changes in A. BB saw both Ducks & Reign dropping to B. The B flight 1 division saw the most movement with the addition of the two dropped BB teams, dropping the Leafs & Kings and adding  SDIA from flight 2 respectively.  There are some real solid teams on every plain and it’s going to be a long season for a few of these teams as well.  Good luck to you all and remember to have fun and enjoy the ride.

How is it decided that teams are moved up or down? Does SCAHA decide? Or is it the coach's decision?

From what I understand - Coach decides, Club then agrees or disagrees with coach(ultimately gets the final say) and submits to SCAHA.  SCAHA expects the coach and club to be realistic at the Squirt level.

I believe this process changes and SCAHA gets involved at the peewee AA level, then they start making decisions.
